Windows 10 Anniversary Update
This article documents the Windows 10 Anniversary Update process that is being managed as part of the Symantec Altiris Client Management System. What is the Windows 10 Anniversary Update?
Microsoft released an Anniversary Update for Windows 10 on August 2nd, 2016 as a major update to the Windows 10 operating system. The update introduced a number of new features for the operating system.
More importantly, Microsoft has branched Windows 10 into several major revisions and will no longer be releasing security updates to older branches.
What systems will receive the update?
At this time, only systems running older versions of Windows 10 will receive the update. Other versions of Windows (i.e. Windows XP, Vista, 7, and 8) will not receive this update. Mac computers are not affected by this update as they do not run Windows.
You will receive an email if you will be receiving the update.
Is this update mandatory?
For systems running older versions of Windows 10, yes.

How long does it take to apply the update?
During the update process, your computer will restart several times. The update process will run for 45 minutes or longer (depending on the speed of your system) and you will not be able to use your system during this process. Save your work and close applications before starting the update process.
How do I start the update?
Follow these instructions to start the update process
- Double-click the Symantec Management Agent icon in your Task Bar to open the Symantec Management Agent.
- Open the Software Delivery tab.
- You should see a Policy named Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Select this update by clicking once on it.
- To start the update, click on the Windows 10 Anniversary Update link in the left column under Application Tasks

When will I receive the update?
The update will be released in two phases.
Phase 1 will run March 27th through April 9th 2017.
During this phase, the update will be available to you to run at your earliest convenience but will not run automatically. To run the update, follow the instructions in this article under the How do I start the update section above.
Phase 2 will begin April 10th, 2017.
During Phase 2, in addition to allowing you to start the update at your convenience, the Symantec Altiris Client Management Agent will begin notifying you that the update has been scheduled.
A pop-up message will appear in the Windows 10 Notification Center. When you select this notification, a notification from the Symantec Altiris Client will appear. You will be able to run or postpone the update (up to a maximum of 5 days).
Important!: Do not close this window. Either select Run Now or Run Later. Closing the window will start the update process without additional notification.

What should I do if my update fails?
If your update fails, please send an email to email@example.com with the subject line "My Windows 10 Update failed". We will take steps to minimize the inconvenience and work with you to solve the problem.
